Alloying ElementĪny metallic element added during the melting of steel or aluminum for the purpose of increasing corrosion resistance, hardness, or strength. AISI’s membership is comprised of integrated and electric arc furnace steelmakers, and associate members who are suppliers to or customers of the steel industry. AISI also plays a lead role in the development and application of new steels and steelmaking technology. AISI (American Iron and Steel Institute)ĪISI serves as the voice of the American steel industry in the public policy arena and advances the case for steel in the marketplace as the preferred material of choice. Typical properties impacted are: hardness, yield strength, tensile strength, ductility, impact value, formability, magnetic properties, etc.
AgingĪ change in the properties of certain metal and alloys (such as steel) that occurs at ambient or moderately elevated temperatures after a hot working heat treatment or cold working operation. Hot Briquetted Iron (HBI) is a concentrated iron ore substitute for scrap for use in electric furnaces. Small lumps are formed by pressing material together. Iron ore or limestone particles are rolled into little balls in a balling drum and hardened by heat. Normally used for iron ore dust collected from the blast furnaces. Sinterīaked particles that stick together in roughly one-inch chunks. The raw material’s properties determine the technique that is used by mills. The powdery material is therefore usually processed into larger pieces. However, reversing only one “attribute” of a pickup can cause some unintended side-effects.Fine particles of limestone (flux) and iron ore are difficult to handle and transport because of dusting and decomposition. You can try to reverse the coil direction, for example. If your pickups are out of phase, you might be able to fix it yourself. The same applies for virtually any instrument that uses Single Coil pickups: Telecasters, Jazz Basses, Mustangs, and Jazzmasters…the list goes on. This cancels hum and keeps pickups in phase. When the Bridge and the Middle pickup combine, their coil directions and their magnetic orientations reverse. With Stratocaster pickups, positions 2 & 4 of the 5-way switch are both in-phase and hum-canceling. Let’s put all of the concepts of Pickup Polarity together with a common example: Stratocaster wiring. This is not always the best case because there is not a lot of consistency throughout the industry. Check with the manufacturer or look onlineĬheck with your manufacturer, or do a quick search on the internet for your exact model. If we can see the leads, we can denote the coil direction Send us a picture of the pickup out of the guitar. The best thing to do here is to pull your pickup out and look at it. This will allow you to observe which way the compass pulls. If you have a compass, it’s easy to do: hold the compass on top of your pickup, on its side. Your pickups either have North or South aimed at your strings. Coil Direction: Once again, there are two options: Counter-Clockwise and Clockwise.
Your Pickup can have either North or South pointing towards the strings, and the coil could be Clockwise or Counter-clockwise (more on this later).
Pickup polarity is the combination of Magnetic Direction and Coil Direction. Now you have to take the pickup out, send it back to us, and pay for shipping again to get the pickup back in phase with your other pickups. What happened? Your Bridge pickup is out of phase with the rest of your pickups. It sounds great on its own, but when you combine the Bridge with the Middle pickup, it sounds like crap! It seems thin, hollow, and weak. You’re excited to throw it in and rock out. You just purchased a Bridge pickup for your guitar. Trust us – it’s not too difficult to find your pickup polarity, and it’s well worth the effort.įor identifying your magnetic polarity, we recommend buying one of these: Schatten Magnet Polarity Tester IMAGINE THIS SCENARIO: If you’re reading this article, you probably were trying to order a single pickup.
